Excluding ACAD files from Anti-Virus
submitted:   May 2nd 2008 @ 1:54 pm

Excluding ACAD files from Anti-Virus Scanners may increase the end drafters efficiency.

The files types most often opened are .dwg, .bak, .dst (sheet control) and .rvt for Revit users. These files have tended to become quite dense as the application becomes more complex (with new versions annually!).

Excluding the files CAN leave you open to possible (but extremely rare) viral attacks - the last, ACAD.Star, having been reported in July 2000. Having server or router resident Antivirus tools can (or should) intercept any possible new threat.

GAUG 2009 Spring meeting

A success! At least in the sense that nobody got hurt...   As with most meetings, there was yummy pizza - thanks to our sponsor, Sieler Instrument, and lots of chatting about Autodesk stuff.   Melanie Perry presented an overview of the new AutoCAD 2009 release.   Haden Smith presented "Revit for the Project Manager", followed by a small meeting of the board members to hand over the keys to the new president, Nicholas Iyadurai.

Next Meeting!
Will be posted here as well as emailed when it's scheduled (probably June or July)

AutoCAD '09 Released!

Did you get your subscription? You should have by now.   After a well hidden release date and I'm sure a huge party somewhere out west, Autdesk released AutoCAD 2009

  • New user interface
  • Enhanced navigation
  • InfoCenter
  • Menu Browser
  • Ribbon and Status Bar
  • Quick Access Toolbar
  • Action Recorder
  • A series of tools that increase drawing productivity

This release looks MUCH different than the previous few.   It's been compaired to Microsoft Office 2007 - in the general look and intuitive navigation.   After poking at it with a stick for a couple hours, I'd say that it's going to take a bit to get used to if you are used to menu buttons, but it's interface is highly customizable, so it can be made more friendly to your particular style.

SteeringWheels are tracking devices that are divided into wedges. Each wedge on a wheel represents a navigation tool (pan, zoom, etc.).   Logitech shipped a tool like this with some of their high-end mice and trackballs sometime ago.

Ribbon Autodesk has replaced tool bars, pull down menus and dashboard with a new ribbon interface. Operating much like Office 2007 the ribbon allows users to view related commands relevant to their current workspace. Within the ribbon there are a group of TABS to choose all which can be customized using the CUI editor.
